Background of the Study
Gender-based disparities in healthcare access remain a critical concern in many regions, including Ogbomosho North Local Government Area. In many communities, traditional gender roles and socio-cultural biases contribute to unequal access to healthcare services, often disadvantaging women and gender minorities (Afolabi, 2023). Research conducted between 2023 and 2025 has revealed that systemic barriers, including financial constraints, cultural beliefs, and limited health infrastructure, significantly affect the ability of certain gender groups to receive adequate care (Olatunji, 2024). These disparities are evident in preventive care, treatment services, and overall health outcomes. Social and economic factors further compound the issue, leading to higher morbidity and mortality rates among affected groups (Balogun, 2025). This study seeks to examine the extent and underlying causes of gender-based disparities in healthcare access, assessing both the supply-side challenges and the demand-side constraints. Comprehensive analysis of local policies and community practices will highlight gaps in service delivery and suggest practical reforms to ensure that all individuals have equal opportunities for healthcare access.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to improve healthcare services, gender-based disparities continue to limit access for vulnerable groups in Ogbomosho North (Afolabi, 2023). Cultural biases and systemic inequities contribute to significant differences in healthcare utilization between genders (Olatunji, 2024). These disparities result in suboptimal health outcomes and a widening gap in preventive and treatment services. The lack of targeted policies to address these issues exacerbates the problem (Balogun, 2025). This study investigates the factors underlying these disparities to inform policy interventions and improve healthcare equity for all residents.
Objectives of the Study:
To determine the extent of gender-based disparities in healthcare access in Ogbomosho North.
To identify cultural and systemic factors contributing to unequal access.
To recommend policy interventions that promote equitable healthcare services.
Research Questions:
What is the extent of gender-based disparities in healthcare access?
Which socio-cultural and systemic factors contribute to these disparities?
How can policy interventions improve healthcare equity in Ogbomosho North?
Research Hypotheses:
Gender significantly influences healthcare access in Ogbomosho North.
Cultural biases are a primary barrier to equitable healthcare utilization.
Policy interventions can significantly reduce gender-based healthcare disparities.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights gender-based disparities in healthcare access, providing evidence for targeted policy reforms. The findings will support healthcare providers, policymakers, and community leaders in developing strategies that ensure equitable access for all. Enhanced understanding of these disparities will contribute to improved health outcomes and social justice in Ogbomosho North.
